SMU Students Analyze the 2012 Presidential Election

September 17, 2012 proved to be an eventful day for the 2012 Presidential Election.

President Barack Obama visited Cincinnati, Ohio where he verbally attacked China and announced he will file another trade complaint against the country. Since Obama is on the campaign trail, he had to respond to Romney’s claims that he has ignored Chinese trade violations. Obama slipped in a Romney-Bain Capital reference and their work of outsourcing jobs to China, “Now, I understand my opponent has been running around Ohio claiming he’s going to roll up his sleeves and take the fight to China…Ohio, you can’t stand up to China when all you’ve done is send them our jobs.” Obama is clearly trying to win over white working class voters. The outsourcing of jobs also relates to auto companies who have many factories in Ohio. Romney’s ties to Bain Capital not only legitimizes his status as a wealthy man, but also ties him to the outsourcing of jobs. We will see if Romney’s past helps dictate his future for his presidential run.
