Indiana went strongly for Obama in 2008, and went for Romney yesterday, 54-43 yet elected Democrat Joe Donnelly to the Senate, 49-44.
Missouri went Red for Romney 54-44; yet elected Democrat McCaskill over Akin to the Senate. Clearly, Akin’s remarks regarding abortion clouted his campaign, but a 15 percentage point advantage was not expected.
Montana and North Dakota have both held strong for the Republican nominee for President year and year again. Both have been a foregone conclusion in favor of the GOP of recent. That said BOTH elected a Democrat to Senate, 48-44 and 50.5-49.5 respectively. Third party nominee, Dan Cox won just over 6% of the Montana vote perhaps aiding in the Democrat victory.
Utah: The home state of Romney, went over 72% for Romney. Utah’s 4th district elected Democrat Tim Matheson over RNC keynote speaker Mia Love 49 to 48% to the House. According to local Utah papers, Matheson is relatively moderate and a Mormon. That said, Love’s platform, both figuratively and literally was viewed on the national scene.
